Choosing Wisely (By: Kimberly A. Tessmer, RD LD)
Choosing your nutrients wisely can play a key role in your weight control. When you opt for foods lower in calories, fat, saturated fat, sugar and cholesterol and foods higher in fiber you will help to control your total intake of calories for the day. If you eat more calories than you burn, your body stores the excess as fat. Fat has more than double the calories per gram than protein and carbohydrate. Concentrate on eating a healthy diet and your waste line as well as your health will thank you!

Your Vegetable Preference (By: Kimberly A. Tessmer, RD LD)
You can enjoy fresh OR frozen vegetables as part of a healthy lifestyle depending on your preferences, lifestyle, and budget. A popular misconception is that all processed foods are lacking essential nutrients. But this is not true. In fact commercially processed vegetables and fruits are often frozen or canned at the farm immediately following the harvest. This promptness can help to preserve more nutrients than fresh fruits or veggies that have been improperly stored in transit, at the market or at home. Canned vegetables can sometimes be high in sodium so sticking to frozen or fresh is your best bet. Frozen can be very convenient and will last much longer than their fresh counterparts. However, fresh sometimes has much better flavor! Though there are both pros and cons to your vegetable preference, be assured that both can count towards your required intake each day! |

Be a Role Model (By: Kimberly A. Tessmer, RD LD)
Your children will pick up the same attitude you have about exercise so make it a positive one! If your children see you enjoying exercise and doing it regularly they too will most likely pick up your good habit. But if you view exercise as a chore or ignore it all together, chances are they will too. Think of fun activities you can do together with your kids! It will help them to learn to make exercise part of their everyday lifestyle and will make it more fun for you too!
